Week 5

Today Maria, Lisa and Lindsay and their babies were in. We started off by having a look at what everyone had been making over the Easter break. Lisa had finished her sampler off. She has used really creative stitches, adapting stitches into her own style. And her message and writing she has used are lovely. Lisa had also created a new mini sampler with Lacey's name and birth details on too. Maria had added really pretty little daffodils to her sampler. Lindsay has created a really elaborate and skillful motif sampler that she had developed from a stylised flower pattern on an envelope she received- she is now adding the design to her sampler. Lindsay had taken an embroidery book out of the library and had been using it to learn new stitches.

It was really exciting to see what everyone has been creating in their own time. Everyone said it had given them something different to do when the children are in bed or at school and that sewing is a good alternative to watching TV or being on the internet.

Today I demonstrated simple felt applique using blanket stitch. We talked about applique and what you can use it for.

Today we talked about all sorts of things: How the Easter holidays were, being glad/ sad the kids are back at school, The Great British Sewing Bee, sewing at home, disciplining children, working together to do that with your partner, bedrooms and sleeping patterns.

We talked about the work we will do next- starting to embellish clothing with embroidery and applique. Maria is planning to make a Ninja Turtles tracksuit for her son's 6th birthday in a few weeks. We also talked about what we will do with the last 4 workshops- I had initially said we could continue with sewing if people wanted to after the planned first 6 classes, or try crochet or knit or something different. Everyone said they would like to continue with stitching for now, to learn more skills and how to apply them. I am going to look at the potential of applying for more funding for September.

Everyone said they will really miss the group when we get to the end of the 10 week and that they woulod continue if they could.

Leslie said afterwards she has been noticing that the group are really bonding and that new friendships are forming.
